Never Stop Learning: Helpful Reads to Benefit You and Your Pets!
I oftentimes laugh when I think of the book that was published in the 90s titled “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” My laughter comes from self-reflection because honestly, I would love if I learned everything in kindergarten. Life would be so much easier. I learn from my experiences. This is a nice way of saying I learn from my mistakes! And since mistakes are inevitable, I have dubbed myself “a lifelong learner”! It is also helpful that I love to read and stay updated on what is going on in the pet industry so I can continue to take great care of my dog, KoKo, and share this knowledge with others like YOU!
Below are recent articles that I found to be helpful, interesting, and entertaining.
Longing for Longevity
As you all know from reading my previous posts, I have been focusing on healthy habits for healthy aging because the longevity of our beloved pets is what everyone desires. I am not alone in my quest and enjoyed reading the article “How to Keep Your Dog Healthier for Longer” featuring some great advice from Brandon Stapleton, DVM, the head veterinarian for The Farmer’s Dog. While he hit on some points I’ve recently discussed, he also discusses new ones such as the importance of training your dog early to avoid trauma and keeping your dog away from dangerous objects and substances. It is worth the read and hopefully you might learn something that will benefit you and your pet!
Farts on a Plane
Last month, I closely followed the news regarding the farting dog on the 13-hour flight from Paris to Singapore. Having been the one responsible for allowing dogs in the passenger cabin on airplanes, I continue to monitor issues so I can work with airlines and pet owners on how to make traveling with pets better. In a recent interview I had with Dr. Nelva Bryant, the first on-staff veterinarian for a major airline and CEO of When Pets Fly, we discussed my “must-haves” when traveling with my dog. I always make sure I have KoKo’s anti-diarrhea medicine that was prescribed by my veterinarian because I want to be prepared in the case something happens when traveling. Just like us, pets can get anxiety when traveling, and the result can be anything from vomiting, diarrhea, or even farting! It is important to consult with your veterinarian before traveling and be prepared for anything that could happen in-flight!
Carriers and Crates
I can’t stress enough the importance of having a carrier or crate for your dog for multiple reasons. I was thrilled when I read the article in Modern Dog featuring a Q&A with a dog trainer who said, “Dogs have a natural denning instinct, normally preferring safe, enclosed quarters for their naps. In the wild, a den is a secure place to get some shut eye without becoming someone else’s meal.” I have always said that dogs love their den environment, specifically in The SHERPA Bag, which I invented! It provides them with a safe space to retreat to if needed and allows owners to easily transport their pets if they need to leave in the case of an emergency. Every pet owner should have a Natural Disaster Plan and a carrier/crate is part of that plan!
I will continue to read and share articles with my fellow lifelong learners and hope together we can continue to find new and better ways to care for our beloved pets!
